Each provider runs their own business. Prices, schedules and materials differ from one to the next. That is normal, and it is one reason to compare.

What happens on the call

Expect a few plain questions. How many windows? What type of home? Which rooms? Is there siding involved? Do you have photos or measurements?

The provider may offer a visit to look at the job. Then you get an estimate. Ask for it in writing, and ask them to list what is and is not included.

Availability varies. Request a callback to check provider availability for your area. Many providers can respond quickly, but timing depends on their schedule and season.

What to ask a provider

Keep the list short. Ask these:

• Are you licensed and insured? Can I see proof?
• What brand and type of windows do you suggest? Are they energy efficient?
• How do you handle flashing and sealing?
• What is included in the price? Haul-away? Trim? Cleanup?
• Who does the work: your own crew or subcontractors?
• What warranty comes with the product and the labor?
• How long will it take, and what happens if the schedule slips?

For siding, add this: What is behind the siding? How do you deal with moisture and old boards?

You can ask questions. You can say no. You can get other quotes.

Do not sign on the spot. A good provider will give you time to think. Compare scope, materials and terms, not just the bottom line.

Costs vary by job. Typical U.S. ranges are wide, depending on window size, style, and home type. Only a written quote tells you your real price.
